I’m not a morning person, never have been! But once I had kids, I realized I really didn’t have a choice! I have to be up, functional, and even chipper because my mood really does set the tone for the morning in our house. In the same boat? Try the following five actions to help jumpstart your morning:
1.Wake Up 60 Minutes Before Your Tribe
This one can be challenging depending on whether your kids are early risers! However, having the “me time” in the morning can help you to wake up, put yourself in a positive mood, and focus on some of the other tips in this article. You can use this time to work, pack school lunches, or just drink a cup of coffee in silence before the chaos. However you choose to use this time, it is helpful to start your day with alone time that will help you to set the tone of your day and get you ready to conquer the family once they awake!
2. Exercise Or Make Your Plan For Exercise
Exercising first thing in the morning is a great way to get the endorphins going, start the day on a positive note, and ensure that you stay on top of your exercise plan. If you are the groggy, “not a morning person” like me, exercising first thing in the morning can be tough! If you can’t do it first thing, use your time in the morning to create your daily schedule and fit working out into the equation. You will feel energized even knowing that you have scheduled it in your day.
I am sure there are many of you that will just breeze by this point because you think it is not for you, but I urge that you give it a try! Meditation can improve your health, reduce stress, and help to kickstart your day. Experts suggest that even introducing one minute of meditation in the morning can help to reduce stress and start your day on a positive note. If you are a beginner in meditating, there are apps like Insight Timer which can help guide you through this daily ritual.
4. Small Doses of Gratitude and/or Positivity
Many successful leaders recommend starting your day with a dose of gratitude or positivity. Before reaching for your phone every morning, write in a journal or make a mental note of one thing you are thankful for or one positive thought to jumpstart your morning. To keep the positivity going throughout your morning, you can also subscribe to Shine, a daily affirmation text. Choose your goal on Shine (happiness, confidence, gratitude) and they will send you a daily dose of inspiration!
5. Make Your Bed
Sometimes the smallest actions can help set the stage for the rest of our day. Making your bed first thing in the morning will help you to feel focused, organized, and in control of your day. And there is also the secondary benefit of setting a good example for your kids!
