This week I kicked off a new video series on the Art of Networking. I couldn’t believe how much I had to say on this topic but as I was collecting content I realized it is much more of a step by step science than people realize! It is a topic that I am passionate about because I believe that it really can be a game changer for your business. The more you put yourself out there and the more people you meet, the more opportunities that will come your way! Be sure to check out this week’s video on why networking is so important and tune in next week for tips on finding the right networking events.
In order to show the power of networking, I am sharing 3 examples of opportunities that have come my way as a direct result from putting myself out there:
1.) Attending Conferences & Large Events – These can be the hardest events to network because there are so many people, but it is worth it because you really never know who is in the room! A couple of years ago I went to the Thrive conference in NYC. I was seated in the press section and struck up a conversation with the person sitting next to me, she end up being the parenting editor of the Washington Post! She mentioned my blog in an article about the conference and I followed up after the conference with a couple of story ideas and that is how I began writing for the Washington Post.
2.) Meeting Influencers In Unlikely Places – You never know where your next customer, business partner, or marketing opportunity is going to pop up. A few years ago I was at a wedding of a friend and began chatting with a woman at the cocktail hour. Any time I am speaking to a potential local mom (regardless of where I am), I am sure to weave Kidville into the conversation. This fellow wedding guest had two kids and ended up being a very influential contact in the DC Metro area. I followed up with her after the event and she became a recurring Kidville customer who helped to spread the word to many parents in the area.
3.) Attending Events With A Target List – Often I attend events with a specific target or influencer in mind. For example, there is a local charity event that is hosted by high profile women media personalities in the DC Metro area. I have attended this event to support their cause and also to have the opportunity to meet producers and on-air talent. There have been a couple of occasions where I have met a producer or on-air anchor at this event, let them know who I am and that I have a couple of pitch ideas, followed up the next day, and gotten on to a local tv show as a result! It really can work!
I hope this will inspire you to take action and determine a couple of good networking events that you can attend this month!
