My husband is a huge fan of the movie Field Of Dreams. We just watched the other day with the boys and I have to admit, it is still a great movie! As you will recall, there is a phrase that is chanted throughout the movie “if you build it, they will come”. It turns out that was the right mantra for Ray Kinsella (in Field of Dreams), he built without knowing why or who it would serve and it all worked out. But, in the biz world, it doesn’t always work out that way!
In fact, most biz gurus advise the opposite: you should test your product and poll your audience BEFORE you begin building. It seems a bit counter intuitive, how can you sell something before you have developed it? But if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Why waste time and resources on building something if there is no demand or if it is not what your consumer is looking for? Why not test the demand and consult your consumer as you are developing or even before you begin developing?
I’ve unfortunately learned this lesson the hard way. I spent a ton of time, energy, and resources on building my Small Business Marketing On A Budget course a couple of years ago. After a several months of outlining the course, creating the slides, and recording videos I essentially launched to crickets. I sold a few but nothing commiserate of the blood, sweat, and tears that went into it (cue the violins).
In hindsight, I think there were several other factors working against me. But, I would have known these factors had I put it out to my following and sold the course before I invested a ton of time and resources in building it.
Now I know, many of you are like me, and can’t do things last minute or don’t want the pressure of trying to deliver under an “unnecessary” time clock. Believe me, I feel you! But, you can have an outline ready so you are ready to execute and you can throw it out to your crowd and manage their expectations on time.
So, I am taking my own advice for my next product launch! Many of you have said they are interested in an Insta Bootcamp but now I am opening up enrollment for a limited time to see how many of you will actually enroll!? Click here for more details!
