What impact does your body and your connection between mind and body have on your ability to lead effectively? Many argue that mind/body should be a focus not only for business leaders, but for everyone. How can the focus on mind/body benefit business leaders? For one, working out and physical fitness has been proven to increase mental clarity, reduce stress, and increases energy and focus. Much research has also been done on the benefits of breathing, meditation, and mindfulness. This recent article from Harvard Business Review highlights “Why Leaders Need Meditation Now More Than Ever”. Just three deep breaths can help one to reduce anxiety, gain confidence, reduce stress, and gain clarity — and, as a result, lead and communicate more effectively.
Throughout the book Presence, Amy Cuddy argues that by adopting open and expansive postures we make ourselves feel more powerful, confident and assertive and as a result of that feeling, we can become more powerful, confident and assertive. Cuddy argues that a change in your body language, can lead to a change in your mindset, which can lead to a change in your behavior or in this case, your ability to lead more effectively. What do you think? Will a quick power pose or a few deep breaths help you feel more confident to rock that next interview, slay that tough meeting, or lead through a difficult situation?
